Reschedule the implementation of TRAFFITECH-GH to January 2027 – CUTS International urges MTTD

CUTS International Executive Director Appiah Kusi Adomako has urged authorities not to rush the implementation of TRAFFITECH-GH, saying critical road infrastructure must first be addressed before the technology is fully rolled out. Speaking in an interview on Thursday, October 1, 2026, Adomako questioned whether urban roads are adequately prepared for the planned November 1 rollout, pointing to faulty traffic lights and other infrastructure challenges.

The Ghana Police Service, through the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), says TRAFFITECH is intended to improve compliance with road traffic regulations and help reduce road crashes and fatalities. However, CUTS International believes the effectiveness of the system will depend partly on the readiness of the infrastructure supporting it.

The organisation is calling for the repair and realignment of displaced traffic lights, replacement of faulty signal heads, clearing of vegetation obstructing traffic infrastructure, and repainting of essential road markings. Adomako also called for clear speed-limit signs to be installed ahead of every TRAFFITECH-GH speed camera, as well as at locations where speed limits change.

“I don’t know whether the Department of Urban Roads has even the resources to be able to fix all of these traffic lights that are broken apart. And until we’re able to fix them, I don’t think that we should be in a hurry to implement the traffic tests.” He further urged authorities to broaden public education ahead of the rollout, particularly through social media, community engagements and town hall meetings, stressing the need to inform motorists well in advance.

According to Adomako, the technology could also help reduce direct interactions between motorists and police officers over traffic offences, potentially limiting opportunities for motorists to attempt to avoid penalties.

“It’s going to remove the human interaction whereby, when the police officer stops you after overspeeding or crossing a traffic light, and you want to settle the police officer. Now there will be no police officers because if you give the police officer who is standing on the road the power to not wipe away the offence that the camera has captured. So, I think it’s good for everybody.”

Adomako proposed moving the implementation date from November to January 2027, arguing that the additional time would allow authorities to address outstanding infrastructure and equipment requirements.

“I think that one month is not enough. The implementation should extend from November to January 2027. It’s not just a matter of being extended, but I think that we must do what is right in terms of the equipment and infrastructure that are required. The cameras, the road markings, the signage and all those things are very important.”

As preparations continue for the November 1 rollout of TRAFFITECH-GH, questions remain over whether the necessary road infrastructure will be ready to support the system. Meanwhile, the Police MTTD is intensifying public education ahead of the implementation. For road safety advocates, the focus is on ensuring that technology-driven enforcement is supported by properly maintained roads, functioning traffic infrastructure and adequate public awareness.
