Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has announced plans to introduce a water rationing programme within the next two weeks to address persistent supply challenges in parts of the eastern corridor of the Greater Accra Region. The affected areas include sections of Kpone-Katamanso, Tema East, Tema West and Ashaiman, among other communities.
Speaking during a tour of the affected communities, GWL Public Relations Officer Stanley Martey said the areas would be divided into three zones to facilitate a more organised and equitable distribution of water. He explained that the proposed water demand management programme would allow residents to plan their water usage and store sufficient supplies ahead of scheduled distribution periods.
“We will come out with a rationing programme, or a water demand management programme, and inform the various areas of the days on which they will receive water. “For now, we are working to improve the supply. In about a week or two, we should be able to finalise the programme and communicate it to the affected communities,” he said.
Mr Martey added that GWL engineers had undertaken re-engineering works in some communities as part of efforts to improve water flow and address the persistent supply difficulties. The planned rationing programme is expected to establish a predictable water distribution schedule for affected communities as the company continues efforts to improve supply.
