Chairman of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Constitution Amendment Committee, Frank Davies, has said former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta will return to Ghana “in his own good time.” Davies made the remarks on Saturday, October 3, 2026, at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi, where the NPP is holding its National Delegates Congress and national officers’ elections.
He was responding to questions about Ofori-Atta’s continued absence from Ghana amid ongoing criminal proceedings and efforts by Ghanaian authorities to secure his return to the country. Davies said he would not participate in what he described as the “court of public opinion,” stressing that individuals accused or suspected of wrongdoing must be treated in accordance with due process and the presumption of innocence.
“Our criminal jurisprudence says that an accused person is innocent until proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt, so let those who want to wallow in the court of public opinion keep calling him names; do so, but I am not one of those people because I respect the rights of everyone: accused person, suspect and person of interest,” he said. He added: “For now, whatever the state had against Ofori-Atta has been settled in America, and so let us wait for what they have to settle in Ghana.”
Ofori-Atta, a former Finance Minister, is facing corruption and corruption-related charges in Ghana following investigations by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP). According to the OSP, he faces 28 counts of corruption and corruption-related offences in a case before the High Court in Accra. The charges relate to alleged wrongdoing involving contracts between Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited (SML) and the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).
In June 2026, Ofori-Atta secured a significant legal development in the United States after an immigration court approved his application to adjust his immigration status, clearing the way for him to obtain lawful permanent residency. The decision was reached during proceedings concerning his I-485 petition, an application that forms part of the process for obtaining permanent resident status in the United States.
