Recent electricity outages across the Ashanti Region resulted from faulty equipment and damaged cables – ECG explains

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has attributed recent power outages in parts of the Ashanti Region to equipment failures, cable faults and ongoing infrastructure upgrade works across the transmission and sub-transmission networks. The explanation was provided during a Regulatory and Reliability Performance Monitoring Meeting between ECG and the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) at ECG’s Boadi office in Kumasi on Friday, October 16, 2026.

The meeting formed part of PURC’s regulatory monitoring activities aimed at assessing electricity supply reliability and service quality, addressing operational challenges and ensuring compliance with service delivery standards to protect consumer interests. The General Manager of Ashanti Sub-Transmission was represented at the meeting by Ing. James Mensah Yevunya, Manager for Network Maintenance.

According to Ing. Yevunya, the recent disruptions in electricity supply resulted from two current transformer (CT) explosions on the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) network, as well as a cable fault at the Ridge Bulk Supply Point (BSP). He added that ongoing infrastructure improvement projects being undertaken by both GRIDCo and ECG had placed additional operational constraints on the electricity network during the period.

Ing. Yevunya explained that GRIDCo was upgrading its transformer capacity serving the Ridge BSP from 50/66MVA to 120/145MVA to increase its power supply capacity. Meanwhile, ECG is installing new eight-way 33kV panels at Ridge to accommodate the increased capacity and improve electricity distribution.

He assured PURC that ECG was accelerating work on its installations to ensure the company could receive and utilise the additional capacity once the upgrade was completed, thereby helping to improve electricity supply across the region.

The Ashanti Regional Manager of PURC, Mr. Edward Boduah Kingston, urged ECG to provide the Commission with regular updates on ongoing infrastructure projects and operational developments. He noted that timely communication would enable the public to receive accurate and up-to-date information on electricity supply conditions and any challenges affecting service delivery.

Mr. Kingston also called for adequate resources for ECG’s Public Relations office to strengthen engagement with the media and PURC. He said improved communication would help explain technical operations and electricity supply challenges in clear, accessible language that consumers could easily understand.
