Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has announced that the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has donated $250,000, equivalent to approximately GH¢3 million, to assist victims of the June 29 floods in Ghana. The funds have been transferred to the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA), which will be responsible for distributing the assistance to affected individuals and communities.
In a Facebook post on Friday, October 16, Mr Ablakwa disclosed that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), had agreed to appoint ADRA as an independent implementing partner for the relief initiative.
He noted that the arrangement was designed to promote fairness and impartiality in identifying beneficiaries and distributing the funds, ensuring that the government would not directly participate in selecting recipients.
The announcement was made at the inauguration of Ghana’s National Consultative Committee on Regional Integration (NCCRI), a body tasked with overseeing the implementation of ECOWAS regional integration programmes and social interventions in the country.
Mr Ablakwa stressed the importance of transparency and accountability throughout the process, assuring that the donation would be managed with integrity to ensure that the intended beneficiaries receive the support.
The ECOWAS contribution is expected to provide much-needed assistance to individuals and families whose homes and livelihoods were affected by the devastating floods. The donation forms part of broader efforts by the government and humanitarian organisations to help affected communities recover from the disaster.
The June 29 floods affected more than 38,000 people across the Greater Accra Region, displaced over 7,700 households and resulted in at least 15 deaths.
The latest intervention is expected to strengthen ongoing relief efforts and support recovery among communities still dealing with the aftermath of the flooding.
