GES releases initial capitation grant funds for 2026/2027 school year

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has released the Capitation Grant for the first term of the 2026/2027 academic year, with funds credited to the accounts of District Education Directorates for onward transfer to basic schools. In a circular dated 16 October 2026 and signed by the Deputy Director-General in charge of Quality and Access, Dr. Munawaru Issahaque, on behalf of the Director-General, the Service notified all Regional Directors of Education that the grants had been transferred to the respective district accounts.

The disbursement also covers the Sports and Culture component allocated to District Education Offices. Meanwhile, funds for the regional Sports and Culture component have been transferred separately to the designated accounts of the Regional Education Offices. The Capitation Grant is a major government intervention designed to support the implementation of the Free Compulsory Universal Basic Education (FCUBE) policy. It provides schools with financial resources to procure teaching and learning materials, undertake minor repairs and meet other essential operational expenses.

GES has directed Regional Directors of Education to ensure that the funds reach schools no later than Friday, 30 October 2026. The deadline is intended to enable Heads of Basic Schools to carry out their activities smoothly and without disruption throughout the term. Management also disclosed that a monitoring team from GES Headquarters would visit the regions during the first week of November 2026 to assess and verify the proper disbursement of the grants.

The Service has urged all Regional Directors to treat the transfers as a priority, emphasising the importance of their cooperation in ensuring the timely distribution of funds and the effective implementation of the programme.
