Residents of Nafkoliga in the Binduri District of the Upper East Region have expressed concern over the persistent deaths of fish in a local dam, prompting them to prevent their domestic animals from drinking the water while investigations are pending.
Built in 1956, the dam serves as an important water source for farmers and livestock in the community. It also supports aquaculture and occasionally receives water from the Bagre Dam during spillage events.
Speaking to Channel One News, the Assembly Member for the area, Ayariga Karim, said residents were increasingly worried as the cause of the fish deaths remained unknown. “We’re living in fear because we don’t know what has happened, and the fish keep dying,” he said.
In response to the situation, residents have stopped their domestic animals from accessing the dam for drinking water as they await a report from the Upper East Regional fisheries authorities to determine the possible cause of the deaths. Meanwhile, the Binduri District Agriculture Officer, Abugri Razak Abangiba, has visited the community and advised residents as authorities await further information from the relevant regional officials.
