ECG Launches Nationwide Meter Audit to Combat Electricity Theft

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has announced plans to commence a nationwide meter audit aimed at reducing commercial losses, strengthening revenue assurance and curbing electricity theft. The exercise will be conducted across all ECG operational areas and involve the inspection and verification of prepaid and postpaid meters, Special Load Tariff (SLT) installations and their associated wiring.

In a statement, ECG explained that the audit seeks to assess the integrity of metering systems and ensure that electricity consumption is accurately measured and billed. The company has appealed to customers, landlords, estate managers, facility managers and security personnel to cooperate with authorised ECG staff by granting them access to their premises, cautioning against denying or delaying entry on the grounds that individual notification letters have not been received.

According to ECG, the public announcement constitutes official notice of the exercise, and no additional notification letters or appointment notices will be issued before the audit begins. Nevertheless, the company has urged the public to verify the identities of field personnel before allowing them onto their properties. It said all employees and authorised agents participating in the exercise would be required to carry official identification cards.

Customers can confirm the identities of ECG personnel by contacting the company’s Customer Call Centre on 0302 611 611 or using the *226# USSD service, which is accessible across all mobile networks. To verify a staff member through the USSD platform, customers should dial *226#, select Option 5 for staff verification and enter the six-digit verification code provided by the individual. The system will then display the staff member’s full name, region and district to enable confirmation.

ECG also referred to Regulation 4(h) of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (Customer Service) Regulations, 2020 (L.I. 2413), which requires consumers to provide utility employees or authorised agents with safe and reasonable access to their premises, provided they present verifiable identification and adhere to the utility’s customer charter.

The company encouraged customers who require further clarification or information about the audit to contact its call centre or reach out through its official social media platforms using the handle @ECGghOfficial.
