Obuasi SHTS case: Allow the legal process to take its course – Prof. Opoku-Agyemang

Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has urged the public to allow the law to take its course in the alleged sexual misconduct case involving the headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS), Zakaria Abdulai. She described the allegations as a serious national concern, stressing that the matter required careful attention because of its potential consequences for the lives and futures of the students involved.

“What I want to say at this point is that this is a very, very serious matter. It is a matter of concern to all of us, and it is a matter of national concern,” she said. She added that the legal process must be allowed to proceed, given the lasting impact the case could have on the affected individuals.

“What I want to see is that we all allow the law to take its course, because this is a very serious matter, especially as it affects the lives of people, not only in the present, but also going into the future. So, let’s allow the law to take its course,” she said. The Vice President made the remarks upon returning from the Global South Academic Forum in Shanghai, China.

Her comments follow the interdiction and subsequent arrest of Mr Abdulai over allegations of sexual misconduct and abuse involving female students at the school. According to the police, a 20-year-old Form Two student, accompanied by her father, lodged a complaint with the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) in Obuasi on August 4, 2026.

Other reports suggest that 19 additional girls at the school were allegedly abused by the headmaster. The case has sparked widespread public concern, with calls for a comprehensive investigation into the allegations. Before the Vice President’s remarks, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Director of Communications, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, had criticised her for not publicly addressing the matter.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Wednesday, October 21, he described her silence as disappointing, arguing that women and girls expected her to speak out on issues affecting their safety, rights and welfare.
