Manhyia South Member of Parliament Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah has been granted GH¢10 million bail with two sureties after pleading not guilty to three charges filed against him by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO). The bail was granted after prosecutors, led by Deputy Attorney-General Justice Srem-Sai, presented the charges against the legislator before the court. The two sureties are the Members of Parliament for Bosome Freho and Effia.
Baffour Awuah denied all the charges, which include conspiracy to commit a crime, dissipation of public funds, and intentionally causing financial loss to the state. He also pleaded not guilty to a money laundering charge involving an alleged GH¢1 million transfer to the then Managing Director of SIC Life in 2024. The prosecution team comprises Senior State Attorney Nana Ama Prempeh and EOCO officers Leo Anthony Asiamah, Emmanuel Dzakata and Rabiatu Abdulai, who are expected to assist in presenting the state’s case.
The charges arise from an EOCO investigation into alleged financial transactions involving SIC Life Savings and Loans. However, Baffour Awuah’s lawyer, Samuel Atta Akyea, has previously dismissed the allegations, arguing that his client’s involvement was connected to legitimate legal services provided to SIC Life.
The latest proceedings come after the MP surrendered to EOCO on October 1, following the issuance of an arrest warrant by an Accra High Court. EOCO subsequently confirmed his surrender and said he was cooperating with investigators. The case will now proceed through the court process, with the prosecution expected to present evidence in support of the charges.
