A total of 7,163 delegates from all over Ghana are expected to participate in the New Patriotic Party’s National Delegates Congress and Officers’ elections on Saturday, October 3, 2026, at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi. The congress will be divided into two parts: it will discuss proposed amendments to sections of the party’s constitution and oversee the election of national officers.
Proposals for amendment
According to Citi News sources, fewer than 20 amendments are expected to be proposed at the upcoming NPP national conference. The proposed changes include provisions that were not adopted during the party’s last constitutional amendment exercise held in Accra in January 2026, as well as new proposals that the party believes require further review.
One of the key proposals relates to the designation of the party’s leader. At its January 31 conference, the NPP introduced a provision stating that the National Chairman would serve as the leader of the party at all times. Following subsequent deliberations, however, the party is proposing an amendment that would instead designate the party’s flagbearer as its leader.
Another proposed change concerns the election of Vice Chairpersons. Under the existing constitution, all candidates contest for the position of National First Vice Chairman, with the first, second and third Vice Chairpersons determined according to the number of votes each candidate receives. Under the proposed arrangement, candidates would instead declare and contest for specific Vice Chairperson positions.
The party will also seek delegates’ approval to appoint three additional Vice Chairpersons who would serve without being elected. Other proposed amendments include the creation of Deputy Communications Officer positions and the elevation of the IT Officer to an executive position.
Based on proceedings at the Legon conference, the Chairperson of the Constitutional Amendment Committee, or a representative, is expected to read the motions arising from the proposals before delegates vote by voice.
Breakdown of delegates
The election of national executives is expected to be the main focus of the congress. A total of 7,163 delegates are anticipated to cast their votes. The Ashanti Region has the highest number of delegates, totalling 1,122, followed by Greater Accra with 773 delegates and the Eastern Region with 732 delegates.
In contrast, the Savannah Region has the fewest delegates, with only 184, followed by the Western North Region with 223 delegates. Out of the 7,163 delegates, 2,745 will participate in the Youth Organiser election, 1,275 in the Women’s Organiser election, and 858 in the NASARA Organiser election.
