Masturbation can negatively affect various aspects of a person’s life

Masturbation is sexual self-stimulation involving physical stimulation of the genitals, often through touching, caressing, or stroking. It may or may not result in orgasm. Masturbation can occur at different stages of life. Children may sometimes touch or explore their bodies out of curiosity and discover that certain forms of touch produce pleasurable sensations.

Such behaviour in childhood should be understood in the context of normal bodily curiosity rather than automatically being interpreted through an adult sexual lens. As children grow into adolescence, they become increasingly aware of their sexuality. Some may experiment with masturbation as they explore these feelings. The frequency varies considerably from person to person. Some people masturbate occasionally, while others develop a habitual pattern that they find difficult to control.

Masturbation is also practised by adults, including people who are single, dating, or married. Some people turn to it when they experience strong sexual desires, while others may do so when their partner is unavailable or when they are dealing with loneliness, anxiety, frustration, or emotional dissatisfaction.

Why Do People Masturbate?

There are many reasons why people may engage in masturbation. Sexual desire is one obvious factor, but emotional and psychological circumstances can also play a role. Some people may use it as a way of coping with stress, loneliness, boredom, anxiety, or other difficult emotions. For others, masturbation may become a habit that is difficult to control. When a person repeatedly engages in a behaviour despite wanting to stop, it can become a source of personal distress, conflict with one’s values, or difficulties in relationships and daily responsibilities.

Possible Effects on Life

The effects of masturbation can vary greatly from person to person. From a Christian perspective, however, the concern is not simply about the physical act but also about how sexual desire is managed and directed. For some people, masturbation may become connected with pornography, fantasy, secrecy, or compulsive behaviour. When this happens, it can interfere with concentration, responsibilities, relationships, or a person’s sense of self-control.

Some individuals also experience guilt or shame because their sexual behaviour conflicts with their religious, cultural, or personal convictions. These feelings can become particularly difficult when they are persistent or overwhelming. Masturbation may also become problematic within marriage when it consistently replaces or interferes with intimacy between spouses.

If one partner develops a strong dependence on solitary sexual stimulation, the couple may experience frustration, disappointment, or emotional distance. It is therefore important to distinguish between occasional sexual behaviour and a pattern that has become compulsive, distressing, or harmful to a person’s relationships and responsibilities.

The Christian Perspective

The Bible does not contain a verse that explicitly mentions masturbation by name. Nevertheless, Christians often consider the subject in light of broader biblical teachings about sexual purity, self-control, the body, and the intentions of the heart.

Proverbs 4:23 teaches:

“Guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”

Similarly, 1 Corinthians 6:19–20 teaches that the body is a temple of the Holy Spirit and encourages believers to honour God with their bodies.

For Christians who believe that sexual expression belongs within marriage, masturbation may therefore be viewed as inconsistent with their understanding of God’s purpose for sexuality. The issue is not merely the physical act but also the thoughts, desires, fantasies, and habits that may accompany it.

Throughout Christian history, various Church authorities and theologians have taught that masturbation is morally wrong. This position has been particularly prominent within Catholic moral teaching, although Christian denominations and individual Christians differ in how they interpret the biblical and theological questions surrounding masturbation.

Choosing Self-Control

For someone who believes masturbation conflicts with their faith or personal values, overcoming the habit may require patience, discipline, prayer, and practical changes. Rather than relying solely on willpower, it can be helpful to identify situations that trigger the behaviour and develop healthier responses. Exercise, meaningful work, healthy relationships, adequate rest, prayer, and avoiding situations that encourage temptation can all support greater self-control.

Christian believers may also find strength through Scripture, prayer, accountability, and a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ. Sexual restraint does not prevent a person from developing emotionally or personally. On the contrary, learning to manage sexual desires responsibly can be part of developing maturity, discipline, and respect for oneself and others.3 The goal should not be to live in constant fear, guilt, or shame, but to pursue a life that is consistent with one’s convictions and values.

Say No to Compulsive Sexual Habits

Masturbation can become a problem when it is compulsive, interferes with responsibilities or relationships, or causes significant personal distress. Anyone struggling to control the behaviour should not assume that they are beyond help. For Christians, spiritual growth can involve prayer, repentance, accountability, and dependence on God’s grace.

Professional counselling or therapy may also be helpful when a sexual habit has become compulsive or is connected to anxiety, depression, trauma, or relationship difficulties. The Christian life calls believers to self-control, purity, and honouring God with their bodies. With faith, discipline, support, and perseverance, a person can work toward a healthier and more purposeful approach to sexuality.
