Amazon Explores Partnership Opportunities with Ghana to Advance Digital Connectivity

Amazon is considering Ghana as a potential partner in its efforts to expand digital connectivity across Africa. The development follows high-level discussions between President John Dramani Mahama and senior Amazon executives on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York in September 2026. The engagement forms part of President Mahama’s broader effort to reposition Ghana’s relationship with major American companies from one centred on aid to one focused on investment, trade, technology and job creation.

President Mahama made a similar appeal during a separate U.S.–Ghana Presidential Roundtable in New York, where he called for the next phase of Ghana-U.S. relations to place greater emphasis on trade, technology and strategic partnerships. Following the meeting, Amazon’s Senior Vice President and Chief Global Affairs & Legal Officer, David Zapolsky, described his engagement with President Mahama as productive. He highlighted Ghana’s potential role in Amazon’s plans to expand broadband connectivity across the continent.

The engagement forms part of Ghana’s strategy to leverage high-level diplomacy to attract global capital, expertise and technology to the country. Beyond improving connectivity, expanded access to high-speed internet, particularly in rural and underserved communities, could support digital education, healthcare delivery, financial inclusion, agriculture, entrepreneurship and e-commerce, while enabling more young Ghanaians to participate in the global digital economy.

The potential partnership could also support Ghana’s ambition to position itself as a digital and technology hub for West Africa. The country’s hosting of the AfCFTA Secretariat further strengthens its position as a potential gateway for international businesses seeking access to the wider African market.
