The Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Professor Ernest Kofi Davis, has announced plans to prohibit teachers from inviting students to their bungalows to perform domestic chores, as part of measures to curb sexual misconduct and safeguard learners.
Professor Davis said the GES would issue a formal directive to schools through regional education directors, reminding teachers of the service’s code of conduct, which expressly prohibits the practice. He reaffirmed his support for calls to ban students from visiting teachers’ residences for household duties, stressing that such conduct violates established professional standards.
According to him, Section 3.7 (V) of the GES code of conduct clearly states that students must not be required to undertake household chores for teachers. He said the service would communicate the directive to regional education directors on October 23 to ensure that teachers are reminded of their obligations and comply with the rules.
Professor Davis described the practice as unacceptable and urged teachers to familiarise themselves with the code of conduct and refrain from inviting students to their homes for domestic work. The announcement comes amid concerns over student safety following allegations that Zakaria Abdulai raped 19 students.
