The United States Embassy in Accra has provided guidelines for nonimmigrant visa applicants who wish to secure an earlier interview appointment due to an unforeseen emergency, stressing the importance of following the prescribed procedures and submitting supporting documentation. The arrangement is designed for individuals facing urgent travel situations, such as those requiring emergency medical treatment in the United States or travelling to attend the funeral of an immediate family member, according to an update issued on Friday, October 6. Urgent and unexpected business-related travel may also qualify for consideration.
However, the Embassy has warned that emergency appointment slots are limited and that submitting an expedited appointment request does not automatically guarantee approval or an interview before the applicant’s planned travel date. To be eligible, applicants must first complete the online Nonimmigrant Visa Application Form (DS-160), pay the required visa application fee and schedule the earliest available regular interview through the official appointment portal, usvisaappt.com. Only after fulfilling these initial requirements can applicants submit a request to the Consular Section for an emergency interview appointment.
How to apply
To submit a request, applicants must sign in to their account on the appointment portal, go to “My Dashboard” and select “Create Emergency Request”.
They are then required to complete an Emergency Request Form, explaining the nature of the emergency, the intended travel date and why an earlier interview is necessary.
Supporting documents must also be uploaded to substantiate the claim. These may include relevant medical records or correspondence, depending on the nature of the emergency.
The Embassy has stressed the importance of providing a clear and detailed explanation, together with credible documentation, to enable consular officials to assess the circumstances.
An applicant whose request is approved will receive an email notification and must return to the appointment portal to select a new interview date and time from the available slots.
Those whose requests are declined will also be notified by email but will retain their original interview appointments.
An earlier interview does not guarantee a visa
The US Department of State’s general guidelines for nonimmigrant visas indicate that expedited interview appointments are reserved for applicants facing urgent and unforeseen circumstances, such as medical emergencies, bereavement and certain school admission start dates. Applicants seeking an earlier interview are required to submit supporting documents demonstrating the urgency of their travel.
However, the Department clarifies that requests involving weddings, graduation ceremonies, last-minute holidays or routine business and professional conferences do not generally qualify for emergency consideration. Individuals travelling for these purposes are therefore encouraged to follow the standard application process and apply well in advance of their planned departure.
The Department further emphasises that approval of an expedited interview request does not guarantee visa issuance. Applicants must still meet all the eligibility requirements for their respective visa categories, while the final decision to grant or deny a visa rests with a consular officer following an assessment of the application.
It also advises prospective travellers to begin the application process early, noting that interview waiting times may fluctuate depending on application volumes and staffing capacity. Applicants are equally encouraged to familiarise themselves with the Embassy’s security guidelines and prohibited-items list before attending their scheduled interviews.
Once passports and other documents are ready for collection, applicants will receive a notification outlining the necessary collection procedures. However, the Embassy has made clear that applicants are not permitted to pick up their passports or other documents in person from its premises.
