Selected Accra Roads to Be Closed by AMA Ahead of Christmas Trading

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has announced plans to temporarily close several roads within the Central Business District (CBD) in December to provide additional trading spaces for vendors ahead of the Christmas festivities. Speaking during the November edition of the National Sanitation Exercise, Accra Mayor Michael Kpakpo Allotey said the initiative is intended to support traders who do not have permanent shops by giving them an opportunity to sell their goods during the festive season and increase their earnings.

According to the Mayor, roads stretching from the Cocoa Board area to Kantamanto will be affected by the planned closures, following a directive from the Minister for Local Government, Mahama Ayariga. He urged traders to make the most of the opportunity to maximise their profits in December, emphasising that the arrangement is designed to create more room for those who operate without permanent business premises.

“We want you to make more sales this December than ever before. The Local Government Minister has instructed us to block some roads to create space for traders without shops,” he said. Meanwhile, the Mayor has directed traders operating at bus stops to vacate those locations by Monday to ease congestion and ensure the smooth movement of vehicles and pedestrians.
