Gamal Gorkeh Nkrumah, Son of Ghana’s First President, Dies at 68

Gamal Gorkeh Nkrumah, a veteran journalist, author and son of Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, has died in Cairo, Egypt, at the age of 68. The Nkrumah family announced his death in a statement issued by his younger sister, Samia Nkrumah, on Wednesday, October 14, 2026.

The statement expressed profound sadness over the loss of Gamal, describing him as a beloved son of Ghana’s founding President and a respected journalist, writer and intellectual. According to the family, he passed away peacefully in Cairo after a prolonged illness. He had been receiving treatment and rehabilitation following a stroke.

Born in Accra in 1958, Gamal was the son of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and his Egyptian wife, Fathia Nkrumah. He built a distinguished career in journalism, serving as an editor at Al-Ahram Weekly, the English-language publication of Egypt’s Al-Ahram press organisation. During his more than 15 years with the newspaper, he reported on international affairs and wrote extensively on African and global politics, with a particular focus on Pan-Africanism and Africa’s role in world affairs.

Gamal pursued his higher education at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in London, where he earned a doctorate in political science.

His burial is scheduled to take place in Egypt on October 17, 2026, in accordance with Islamic traditions.

He is survived by his younger sister, Samia Nkrumah, a Ghanaian politician who previously served as Member of Parliament for Jomoro in the Western Region and chaired the Convention People’s Party (CPP). His younger brother, Sekou Nkrumah, is a writer and political activist based in Ghana.

In a statement announcing his death, the family said Gamal remained steadfast throughout his life in his commitment to justice, human dignity, African unity and international solidarity. Through his work as a journalist and commentator, he used his voice and intellect to explore the political, social and cultural dynamics shaping Africa and the wider world.

The statement described him as a man of exceptional intellectual curiosity, independent thought and quiet conviction, who upheld the enduring legacy of his father in his own unique way while establishing a reputation built on his personal principles and accomplishments.

“His passing represents a profound loss not only to our family and loved ones, but also to the wider community of friends, colleagues and readers who valued his insight, humanity and unwavering engagement with the great questions of our time,” the family said.

The Nkrumah family said it would remember Gamal with deep love, gratitude and pride, noting that his wisdom, kindness and dedication to the values he cherished would continue to inspire others.

The family also expressed sincere appreciation to everyone who supported him during his illness, particularly the medical professionals and caregivers in Cairo who ensured he received care with dignity and compassion.

It extended its heartfelt gratitude to the governments and people of Egypt and Ghana for their generous support during the difficult period.

The family further appealed to the public to respect its privacy as it grieves the loss, adding that details of memorial arrangements and opportunities to honour Gamal’s life and legacy would be announced in due course.
