The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has commenced a Yellow Fever Reactive Vaccination Campaign in the Wa West, Sissala East, and Sissala West districts of the Upper West Region. The five-day exercise began on Wednesday, October 14, and is scheduled to end on Sunday, October 18, 2026.
The campaign aims to vaccinate approximately 244,869 people aged nine months to 60 years across the three districts as part of efforts to contain the ongoing yellow fever outbreak and protect residents against the disease.
To ensure extensive coverage and improve access to vaccination services, trained health workers have been deployed to health facilities, while temporary vaccination centres have been established at strategic public locations, including markets, bus stations, churches, mosques, schools, and other busy areas. Mobile vaccination teams are also visiting communities, towns, and villages to reach all eligible individuals within the campaign zones.
Individuals vaccinated during the exercise are being issued yellow vaccination cards as official proof of immunisation. The public has been urged to keep these cards in a safe place, as they may be required when accessing healthcare services, enrolling in schools, or travelling.
Yellow fever vaccination remains the most effective way to prevent the disease and control outbreaks. A single dose of the vaccine provides lifelong protection, making immunisation a vital measure in safeguarding individuals and communities against the potentially serious disease.
The Ghana Health Service has therefore urged all eligible persons aged nine months to 60 years in Wa West, Sissala East, and Sissala West to take advantage of the campaign and get vaccinated. The Service emphasised that widespread public participation is crucial to achieving high vaccination coverage, interrupting the transmission of the virus, and protecting the health and well-being of communities across the three districts.
