New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has pledged to revive the economy of La Pleasure Beach and provide leases to businesses operating at the beachfront if elected President. In a statement issued on Saturday, October 3, 2026, Dr Bawumia criticised the demolition of structures at the beach, particularly the destruction of movable assets that could have been removed by their owners before the exercise.
He described La Pleasure Beach as an important social, economic, cultural and international asset that supports the livelihoods of thousands of people, especially young people. Dr Bawumia said an NPP government would redesign the beachfront to meet the required standards, support existing operators and create a framework that would allow smaller businesses to operate alongside the Labadi Beach Hotel and other establishments.
He further pledged that, if elected, his government would issue leases to individual operators to provide greater security for their businesses. The NPP flagbearer also promised to engage the owners of Laboma Beach to address their concerns, support them in establishing their businesses and ensure that their operations comply with the law.
He said his government would also tackle flooding and environmental challenges around the lagoon as part of efforts to develop the area while protecting the livelihoods sustained by the beach economy. According to Dr Bawumia, La Pleasure Beach has grown into one of Ghana’s most vibrant beach resorts and has contributed to the hosting of international events and activities linked to the Year of Return. “I am committed to saving the thousands of jobs that the beach economy supports and to improving them,” Dr Bawumia said.
