The Parliamentary Committee on Chieftaincy, Culture, and Religious Affairs has urged the government to promptly allocate funds for the rehabilitation and upgrade of the National Theatre. This call comes after a visit by Committee members, who expressed concerns about the facility’s deteriorating state, particularly noting persistent leakages that they identified as a serious safety risk.
The Committee’s Chairman, Dr. Fred Kyei Asamoah, emphasised the need for urgent investment in the National Theatre and other cultural institutions to preserve Ghana’s cultural heritage, create jobs, and support the creative industry. He stated, “We are calling on the government to allocate resources to these agencies, especially the National Theatre. The National Theatre is a ticking time bomb. The issues we witnessed there, particularly the leakages, pose a high risk.”
Dr. Kyei Asamoah stressed that immediate attention is required to prevent further deterioration of the facility. The Committee also visited the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, where its Executive Director, Dr. Collins Rawlings Nunyonameh, revealed that the facility currently lacks a single vehicle to support its operations.
The Committee plans to engage with the relevant authorities regarding the challenges facing both institutions and advocate for measures to improve their operations.
