The Ga Mantse, King Nii Teiko Tsuru II, has emphasised the importance of ensuring that all Ghanaians have fair access to life-saving healthcare, stating that no one should be denied treatment due to financial limitations. He highlighted that the increasing expenses associated with specialised medical care are putting significant strain on families, and underscored the vital role of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (GMTF) as a source of support for those most in need.
The Ga Mantse made these comments during a meeting with stakeholders in the Greater Accra Region, which was part of the GMTF’s nationwide awareness campaign led by the Fund’s Administrator, Adjoa Obuobia Darko-Opoku. He encouraged stakeholders to utilise the Fund’s resources to prevent financial hardship from hindering access to quality healthcare for vulnerable Ghanaians, and suggested that the Fund further enhance maternal healthcare services as part of its mission.
Ms. Darko-Opoku stressed the importance of spreading awareness about the Fund’s activities, noting that many Ghanaians are still unaware of the support it offers. “Even within Greater Accra, families face significant challenges caring for relatives with non-communicable diseases,” she said. She explained that the GMTF was established to bridge key gaps in healthcare delivery, including provision of medical equipment, funding, infrastructure, and other forms of specialised health care. She appealed to individuals, businesses, and corporate entities to back the Fund, enabling it to extend its reach and save more lives.
Dr. Robert Amesiya, Greater Accra Regional Director of Health Services, urged the public to protect the Fund, describing it as an important means of strengthening the health sector and improving access to critical healthcare. He emphasised that collective support is crucial for the Fund to achieve its objectives, especially for those who would otherwise be unable to afford specialised care.
Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, praised President John Dramani Mahama for initiating the Fund and expressed support for the ongoing awareness drive. She called for heightened public awareness to ensure the Fund’s interventions benefit the intended recipients, and advocated for greater collaboration between the GMTF and local government bodies to avoid overlap and make the best use of resources. She reaffirmed the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council’s commitment to supporting stronger partnerships across the region.
