Several people were injured in a stampede at the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) National Delegates Conference held at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi. Three individuals who sustained serious injuries were transported to Kumasi South Hospital for further medical attention, while those with minor injuries were treated at temporary medical centers set up at the conference grounds. The incident occurred when a section of the crowd attempted to push through, triggering a surge that resulted in injuries, including a fracture and one case of someone collapsing.
In response, police personnel at the venue increased crowd-control measures. The large crowd also posed challenges for emergency responders, with paramedics from the Ghana Ambulance Service facing difficulties transporting some of the injured to the hospital. Janfaro Abdullai, Deputy Chief Advanced Emergency Medical Technician and officer in charge at the conference grounds, confirmed the incident.
