The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has denied any involvement in collecting money from applicants in exchange for visas or visa opportunities related to Ghana’s tourism promotion activities during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. In a press statement issued on October 9, 2026, the Authority clarified that its role was limited to identifying participants, facilitating institutional introductions, and providing guidance on visa application procedures.
The initiative, approved by its Board, aims to showcase Ghana’s tourism, culture, music, fashion, crafts, and creative industries to international audiences. The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has engaged with the United States Embassy and the Canadian High Commission to seek guidance on visa requirements for participants; however, it does not have the authority to issue visas or influence the outcomes of visa applications.
“At no point did the GTA possess the authority to issue visas, guarantee visa approvals, or determine the outcomes of individual applications,” the statement emphasised. It clarified that decisions regarding visas are solely the responsibility of the respective diplomatic and immigration authorities.
Additionally, the GTA explained that proposed private-sector sponsorship was not feasible due to significant financial requirements. As a result, participants are required to cover their own visa application fees, as well as travel and accommodation expenses. The Authority also denied ever collecting money for visa opportunities, stating, “The Ghana Tourism Authority unequivocally denies collecting money from any applicant in exchange for visas or visa opportunities.” It urged the public to differentiate between payments made to independent travel service providers and those made to the Authority or its officials.
