Three teacher unions in Ghana—the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Pre-Tertiary Teachers’ Association of Ghana (PRETAG)—have suspended their industrial strike following negotiations with the Council of State and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC).
The decision follows a meeting held on Friday, October 9, convened by the Council of State to engage representatives of the unions on the issues that triggered the industrial action. Speaking after a meeting with the FWSC, GNAT General Secretary Thomas Musah said the suspension came after discussions with the Ministry of Employment and the Council of State over concerns affecting teachers.
“We want to announce that we have suspended the strike today. We want to call all our members to return to the classrooms,” he stated.
The unions began the strike over unresolved issues concerning promotions, conditions of service and allowances for teachers working in deprived areas.
One of their major concerns was the delay in paying arrears owed to teachers following promotions, an issue repeatedly raised by GNAT, NAGRAT and PRETAG.
The suspension is expected to pave the way for further discussions between the unions and the relevant authorities to resolve the outstanding concerns.
