The Christian Council of Ghana has announced the formation of a technical committee composed of representatives from various Christian groups to explore the future of the stalled National Cathedral project. The committee has been given a one-month deadline to develop a practical funding model and make recommendations concerning the location and other important issues related to the project.
Speaking to journalists after a closed-door meeting with the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, the Chairman of the Christian Council of Ghana, Reverend Enoch Nii Narh Thompson, stated that the committee’s recommendations would be presented to President John Mahama to guide the next steps for the project.
“Within this council, we will discuss matters related to funding, location, and other pertinent issues concerning the National Cathedral. We expect to present our recommendations within the month, allowing necessary decisions to be made,” he said.
The Council also called for the expedited completion of the forensic audit of the National Cathedral project, asserting that the findings would help Christian leaders assess the situation and determine appropriate next steps. The National Cathedral project was announced in 2017 by then-President Nana Akufo-Addo as a national Christian worship and heritage center. It was officially commissioned in 2018, with groundbreaking ceremonies taking place in 2019. Since then, the project has faced challenges related to funding and construction, leaving the cathedral incomplete and prompting calls for more clarity regarding its financing and future.
