The Court of Appeal in Kumasi has dismissed an application by the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe Abronye, seeking to halt a defamation suit brought against him and Wontumi Multimedia Company Limited by lawyer and Multimedia Group journalist Samson Lardy Anyenini. A three-member panel, presided over by Justice Eric Baah, on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, rejected Abronye’s renewed application for a stay of proceedings pending the determination of an interlocutory appeal.
The court also awarded GH¢10,000 in costs against him. The ruling marks the third attempt by Abronye to stop the substantive defamation case from proceeding. The suit, filed in April 2025, centres on alleged defamatory statements broadcast on Wontumi TV and Radio.
Abronye is alleged to have described Anyenini as dishonest and corrupt, further claiming that the journalist received US$50,000 to use his position as host of Newsfile on Joy FM and Joy News TV to discredit Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, a Member of Parliament.
Anyenini has denied the allegations and is seeking damages and other reliefs against Abronye, who is the third defendant, Wontumi Multimedia Company Limited, and the media company’s host, Kwaku Kyeremanteng Nkansah. Abronye has yet to file a Statement of Defence responding to the claims. He had earlier challenged the competence of the suit, seeking to have the action dismissed on procedural grounds.
In November 2025, the High Court in Kumasi refused to strike out Anyenini’s case. The court instead ordered a reassessment of the filing fees and dismissed Abronye’s other procedural objections, allowing the substantive defamation action to proceed.
