The Ayawaso West Municipal Assembly (AWMA) has reassured the public of the safety of the unfinished Villaggio building near the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange after a viral video showed construction materials falling from the structure during Wednesday afternoon’s rainstorm. At a press conference, Municipal Chief Executive Dr. Michael Mensah stated that an inspection by both the Assembly and the Engineering Council revealed no signs the building was in danger of collapse.
“We visited the site with the Engineering Council and confirmed there is nothing structurally wrong. The building is stable and not at risk of coming down. The area where the blocks fell was restricted, so no one was endangered. The public can rest assured—there’s no cause for concern and business can continue as usual,” Dr. Mensah explained.
He further clarified that the section where the blocks landed had already been cordoned off and was inaccessible to the public at the time of the incident. The Assembly has advised the contractor to limit further blockwork to a height of one metre and to allow sufficient time for the concrete to cure before resuming construction.
“As per our recommendations, blockwork should be kept to one metre, and proper curing of concrete must be ensured before work continues,” Dr. Mensah noted.
Additionally, the Assembly has called for the installation of safety nets around the building, particularly on the side where the incident occurred, to prevent future incidents of falling materials causing property damage or injuries. “We have recommended the installation of safety nets, especially on the affected side, to stop blocks from falling and potentially damaging nearby property should this happen again,” he added.
