I was cautioned and released on self-recognisance bail – Obuasi SHTS Headmaster

The suspended Headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School, Zakaria Abdulai, has disclosed that he has been cautioned by the Police and granted self-recognisance bail in connection with an alleged rape case. His comments follow reports of his arrest over allegations of sexual assault involving female students of the school, which were highlighted in an investigative report titled “Inside the Dreaded Headmaster’s Bungalow” by JoyNews Investigative Correspondent Manasseh Azure Awuni.

News of his arrest was first disclosed by the Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, when he appeared before the Public Accounts Committee on Tuesday, October 20, 2026. “We’ve been able to get one of the ladies, maybe I shouldn’t be putting so much information out, about semen, we are getting DNA… So, what is happening is that this gentleman has been arrested. He’s going through the due process,” Mr Muntaka told the committee.

In an interview with radio host Blakk Rasta, Mr Abdulai confirmed that he had been cautioned by the Police and granted self-recognisance bail following a complaint lodged by a female student and her parents. “I have been cautioned because one girl and her parents said I have raped her. So they reported, I was cautioned, and as a headmaster I was given self-recognisance bail. I’m waiting for court days,” he said.

Mr Abdulai further suggested that his account of the events surrounding the allegation differed from that of the complainant. “If I give you the turn of events for this particular girl who is claiming I have raped her, you’ll be shocked,” he told the host.

When asked whether he considered the student a bad person based on his account, Mr Abdulai said he could not make such a judgment, although he claimed to know that she had a child and was between 20 and 21 years old. “I don’t know her, but I know she’s given birth. She has a child. She’s 20-21 years old. But I cannot judge her, whether she’s bad or good,” he stated.

He maintained that he had presented his version of events to the committee that investigated the matter, adding that his account differed from that of the student and her family. He said he expected his side of the story to become public soon. Meanwhile, the Police have reportedly forwarded the docket relating to the complaint by one of the alleged victims to the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice for advice on the next course of action.

Following the JoyNews investigation, Mr Abdulai, who previously served as the Juaben Constituency Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), withdrew from the contest for the position of Constituency Chairman amid pressure from within the party.
