Fire at Mallam GRIDCo Substation Leaves Lapaz, Awoshie and Nearby Areas Without Power

A fire has damaged parts of the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) substation at Mallam, disrupting electricity supply to several areas of Accra, including Lapaz, Mallam and Awoshie. The blaze reportedly destroyed control boards and transformers at the facility, raising concerns about its impact on power transmission and the supply of electricity to affected communities.

Firefighters from the Adjen Kotoku and Amasaman fire stations responded promptly to the incident, working to bring the fire under control and prevent it from spreading to other critical installations within the substation. Their swift intervention helped contain the blaze, limiting the damage and averting the possible destruction of additional equipment vital to the facility’s operations.

The cause of the fire remains unknown, with further investigations expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident. Meanwhile, residents and businesses in parts of Accra, particularly Lapaz, Mallam and Awoshie, have experienced power outages following the fire.

The full extent of the damage and the timeline for restoring normal operations at the substation have yet to be determined. Technical assessments will likely be necessary to establish the condition of the affected equipment and identify the repairs required to restore the facility to full operation.

GRIDCo plays a critical role in Ghana’s electricity supply chain by managing the national transmission network, which transports electricity from power generation plants to distribution companies for onward delivery to consumers. Substations are essential components of this network, housing equipment responsible for regulating, protecting and managing the flow of electricity across the transmission system.

Control boards, in particular, support the monitoring and operation of electrical installations. Damage to these components can disrupt normal operations and necessitate technical inspections and repairs before the affected systems can be safely returned to service.
