Former gang leader Duane “Keffe D” Davis has been sentenced to a minimum of 40 years in prison for orchestrating the murder of Tupac Shakur. A jury found the 63-year-old Davis guilty in September on one count of murder with a deadly weapon related to the rap superstar’s death in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas on September 7, 1996. Davis has stated that he plans to appeal the verdict.
Prosecutors argued that although Davis did not pull the trigger himself, he was the ringleader of the group responsible for the murder. In his memoir, he admitted to providing the gun used in the crime. Davis’ conviction marks the first resolution in a cold case that has captivated hip-hop fans for nearly 30 years.
During the sentencing hearing on Tuesday, prosecutor Marc DiGiacomo claimed that Davis spent years “publicly grandstanding” and boasting about his role in Shakur’s death, which he indicated had far-reaching effects on the world.
