The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs has announced a contra-flow arrangement for Ayalolo Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) services on three major corridors leading into Accra’s Central Business District (CBD). The arrangement, which takes effect on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, will operate during peak hours from 6 am to 9 am and 4 pm to 8 pm. It will cover the Amasaman–Accra, Adenta–Accra and Kasoa–Accra corridors, which experience heavy traffic during peak periods.
Under the arrangement, selected sections of the affected roads will be temporarily configured to allow authorised Ayalolo buses to travel against the normal direction of traffic in the priority lanes. The designated contra-flow lanes will be exclusively reserved for Ayalolo BRT services. Private vehicles, taxis, trotros, commercial vehicles and other unauthorised road users will not be allowed to use them.
In a statement issued on Monday, September 28, the Ministry said the initiative forms part of efforts to improve public transportation, ease congestion and provide more reliable mobility for commuters travelling to and from the CBD. The intervention is being implemented in collaboration with the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, the Greater Accra Passenger Transport Executive (GAPTE) and the Department of Urban Roads (DUR).
The MTTD will deploy traffic officers to strategic locations and major intersections along the affected routes to regulate traffic and enforce compliance with the new arrangement. The government expects the initiative to improve the punctuality of Ayalolo services, shorten journey times and reduce congestion on major approaches to the CBD. It is also expected to encourage greater use of mass public transport and reduce the pressure created by private vehicles on the roads.
The Ministry has therefore appealed to motorists, commercial transport operators, pedestrians, businesses and residents along the affected corridors to cooperate with traffic officers and support the implementation of the arrangement.
