Political analyst Dr. Jonathan Asante Otchere has cast doubt on the political stature and experience of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) newly elected National Chairman, John Boadu, arguing that he does not compare favourably with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah. His remarks came in the wake of the NPP’s National Delegates Conference held at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi on October 3, where new national executives were elected.
Speaking on Channel One Newsroom with Nana Tuffour Boateng on October 4, Dr. Asante Otchere said John Boadu fell short of Asiedu Nketiah in terms of political pedigree, influence, and overall value to his party. According to him, the comparison would become even more significant should Asiedu Nketiah decide against contesting the NDC’s presidential nomination.
“I have nothing personal against the chairman who has been elected, but one must consider what he brings to the table,” he stated. “When you compare the two, it is difficult to argue that John Boadu matches Mr. Asiedu Nketiah in political pedigree, gravitas, or value.”
Dr. Asante Otchere further questioned whether the concerns that led NPP delegates to reject Boadu in previous internal elections had been adequately addressed. He maintained that Boadu’s victory appeared to be shaped more by internal party considerations than by assessments of competence. In his view, former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko was a stronger contender, possessing qualities that would have enabled him to rival Asiedu Nketiah in communication skills, articulation, and professional credentials.
The analyst also drew comparisons between the NPP’s re-elected General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, and his NDC counterpart, Fifi Kwetey, suggesting that the profiles and capacities of party executives should form part of any assessment of the leadership strength of Ghana’s two major political parties.
