KMA set to roll out digital advertising boards, replacing static billboards in 2027

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) is set to replace traditional static billboards with digital advertising boards from 2027 as part of efforts to modernise and bring greater order to outdoor advertising across the metropolis. According to a Facebook post by the KMA on Monday, September 7, Kumasi Mayor Richard Ofori Boadi Agyemang announced the initiative during an engagement with 28 registered advertisers in the metropolis.

The Mayor said the existing billboard system had become increasingly disorganised, with advertising structures of varying sizes being erected indiscriminately along major roads. He noted that the situation not only undermines the aesthetic appeal of the city but could also create potential obstructions for motorists and pedestrians. “For a city to thrive, there must be order,” he said.

Under the new policy, the KMA plans to reduce the number of advertising boards across the metropolis while introducing clear standards governing their size, design and placement. The Assembly will determine the number of billboards allowed along designated stretches and set specific requirements for major road corridors and strategic locations.

The new guidelines will cover areas such as the Airport Roundabout, Sofoline, Ahodwo and Bekwai Roundabout. Separate specifications will also be introduced for the Kumasi Zoo, Kejetia and the Central Business District. The Mayor further announced that no billboards would be allowed along the Ahodwo-Santasi stretch until the ongoing road dualisation project is completed. He also warned that the Assembly would remove billboards that have become aged or dilapidated, as well as advertising structures belonging to operators with outstanding payments.
