NDC Kicks Off Constituency Elections Today

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is conducting its constituency executive elections nationwide on Saturday, October 24, and Sunday, October 25, 2026, as part of a broader effort to rejuvenate its grassroots leadership ahead of the 2028 general elections.

Approximately 15,000 aspirants are expected to contest various positions, including constituency chairpersons, vice-chairpersons, secretaries, organisers, treasurers, communications officers, youth organisers and women organisers. The party’s General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, said the two-day exercise forms part of the NDC’s wider reorganisation agenda, which seeks to strengthen the party’s structures and elect new leaders to coordinate activities at the constituency level.

Ahead of the polls, Mr Kwetey outlined voting guidelines requiring delegates to present valid identification before casting their ballots. Accepted forms of identification include the voter identification card, the Ghana Card and the party’s plastic membership identification card.

The party has also banned tally voting for eight positions, directing delegates to vote individually for the affected offices. Ballot papers for the women’s and youth conferences are to be kept securely and counted only after voting in the main constituency executive elections has concluded.

According to the NDC, the measures are designed to ensure fairness, transparency and an orderly electoral process. The Electoral Commission is collaborating with constituency election committees to oversee the polls, while the Ghana Police Service is responsible for maintaining security.

Ketu South Holds Elections Ahead of Nationwide Exercise

In the Volta Region, the Ketu South Constituency held its elections on Friday, October 23, a day before the nationwide exercise, following approval from the party’s national leadership to prevent a clash with other activities. Voting commenced at 9:30 a.m., approximately 90 minutes behind the scheduled start time of 8:00 a.m. A total of 74 aspirants contested various executive positions, with Electoral Commission officials supervising the process and police personnel, alongside National Security operatives, providing security.

Meanwhile, uncertainty surrounds the constituency executive elections in Nkwanta North in the Oti Region, where a High Court in Dambai has issued an interlocutory injunction restraining the exercise. The order, issued on October 21, prohibits the NDC from conducting the elections and from using or certifying the delegates’ list compiled following branch elections held in June and July.

Despite the court order, the party’s Acting Director of IT and Elections, Mahdi Jibrill, has insisted that the polls will proceed, arguing that the party’s national leadership has not been formally served with the injunction. “The Nkwanta North election will come on this weekend. From what I have in the data as we speak, we have no injunction on us. Nobody has served us, and party headquarters, the general secretary, is running the election of the constituency. So for us, we know the election will go on,” he told Citi News.

The legal action was initiated by Gmajobe Yaw and 22 other constituency members, who are challenging the legitimacy of some branch executives whose names appear on the delegates’ list.

Regional and National Elections

Following the constituency-level polls, the NDC is scheduled to hold its regional executive elections on November 14 and 15, 2026. The Regional Youth and Women Conference is expected to take place on November 13. The party’s reorganisation exercise will culminate in its National Congress on December 19, 2026, when national executive officers will be elected. The National Youth and Women Conference is scheduled for December 12. The series of elections forms a key part of the NDC’s preparations to consolidate its internal structures and position the party for the 2028 general elections.
