The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced separate dates for the return of continuing students of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS), following the institution’s temporary closure in August. In an update on the school’s reopening, the Service indicated that third-year students are expected to return on Sunday, October 25, 2026, while second-year students are scheduled to resume on Monday, November 16, 2026. According to the announcement, first-year students reported to the school on September 18, 2026, and have remained on campus since then.

The phased reopening follows the closure of the school to continuing students on August 5, 2026, after disturbances on campus led to the destruction of school property. Media reports also indicated that the unrest resulted in an attack on the headmaster, Zakaria Abdulai, by some students. The incident occurred amid allegations of sexual misconduct against the headmaster. In response, the GES interdicted Mr Abdulai pending investigations, while a complaint was also lodged with the police.
The police have since investigated a complaint involving a student and forwarded the case docket to the Attorney-General for examination and advice. The headmaster’s interdiction remains a separate administrative matter from the criminal investigation into the allegations.
The GES has indicated that arrangements are being made to facilitate the return of continuing students and the resumption of academic activities, adding that further information will be communicated when necessary. The extended closure had sparked concerns about the academic progress of affected students, particularly final-year students preparing for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
