The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has approved an 8% increase in transport fares, which will take effect from Saturday, September 26, 2026. The union’s Deputy Industrial and Public Relations Officer, Samuel Amoah, said the new fares were reached after negotiations between transport operators and the Ministry of Transport.
Speaking on the Channel One Newsroom on Tuesday, September 22, Mr. Amoah explained that the GPRTU initially proposed a 30% increase but eventually agreed to 8% following extensive discussions with the ministry. He said transport operators had been pushing for an increase of at least 25% to cushion them against rising operational costs.
According to Mr. Amoah, the final agreement was also influenced by the government’s assurance that efforts were being made to secure further reductions in fuel prices during the next pricing window. “Finally, we agreed on an 8% increment on transport fares, and it will take effect come Saturday, 26th of this very month,” he said.
Mr. Amoah added that the union would return to the Ministry of Transport if the anticipated reduction in fuel prices failed to materialise. “It’s a promise given to us, and if it fails, we will still go back to the ministry to let them know that the promise given to us has not been fulfilled. Then we will see what will help our operations,” he said.
