The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has introduced six Ghanaian languages on its computer-based driving theory test platform to make the examination more accessible to applicants who cannot read or write in English. The authority’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr Julius Neequaye Kotey, announced the initiative at a press briefing in Accra on Monday, October 12, 2026.
“I am happy to report that the DVLA has introduced six local languages into its Computer-Based Test platform to assist applicants who cannot read or write in English,” he said. The six languages are Twi, Ga, Ewe, Dagbani, Nzema and Hausa. According to Mr Kotey, translation software has been integrated into the platform, enabling applicants to take the mandatory driving theory test in their preferred language.
He made the announcement during the Government Accountability Series press briefing held at Jubilee House. Mr Kotey explained that the initiative was aimed at removing language barriers and enabling applicants to better demonstrate their understanding of road signs, traffic regulations and safe driving practices. He added that the DVLA was working to expand the range of local languages available on the platform to make the test accessible to more applicants.
SMS reminders
The authority has introduced SMS notifications to remind license holders of their renewal or replacement dates. The system sends reminders one month and two weeks before a license expires. “We send a reminder one month before the expiry date, and then a final message is sent two weeks prior,” Mr. Kotey explained. He added that customers whose mobile numbers registered during the license application process have not changed will be eligible to receive these notifications.
Additionally, a similar system is being developed for vehicle roadworthiness renewals. “We are currently working to implement a similar notification system for vehicle roadworthiness renewal services. Soon, we will remind clients of their upcoming due dates for roadworthy renewals,” he stated.
Electronic library
The authority is implementing an electronic library system at its offices that will provide clients with access to driver refresher and road safety videos. “We are introducing this system to allow clients to visit our offices and take some time to watch videos that enhance their driving skills and promote safety on the roads,” Mr. Kotey stated.
