U.S. Congress shifts as voters turn against Trump-aligned Republicans

President Donald Trump urged voters to treat this year’s midterm elections as a referendum on his leadership, asking them to imagine that his name was on the ballot. Voters responded decisively, rejecting both his political agenda and the Republican Party.

According to NBC News projections, Democrats have secured control of both chambers of Congress, delivering a significant rebuke to Trump’s administration. The results reflect widespread dissatisfaction with his policies and growing frustration over Congress’s failure to provide adequate oversight of the president. Voters also made clear that affordability and corruption remain pressing concerns that lawmakers must address.

The Democratic victory in the Senate followed an equally decisive triumph in the House of Representatives, where the party is expected to secure its largest majority in nearly 20 years. Democrats successfully flipped five Republican-held seats across Iowa, Kansas, Ohio, North Carolina, South Carolina and Texas, a state they have long hoped to turn Democratic. In several of these contests, Trump personally endorsed the Republican candidates, sometimes against the wishes of fellow Republicans who questioned their chances of winning in the general election.

One of the earliest indications of a difficult night for Republicans came when South Carolina, a state many Democrats had considered beyond their reach, fell to the opposition early in the election results. Democrats also made significant gains in traditionally conservative, pro-Trump territory, outperforming their achievements during the 2018 midterm elections in Trump’s first term.

The NBC News Exit Poll revealed that 43% of voters identified opposition to Trump as one of the reasons behind their voting decisions. His approval rating was also lower than that of any president on Election Day in nearly two decades. Furthermore, 71% of voters, including 41% of Republicans, expressed the view that Congress had not exercised sufficient oversight over the president.

Other major issues influencing the election included corruption, the rising cost of living, immigration and the war in Iran.

Faced with the scale of the Republican defeat, Trump quickly attempted to distance himself from the outcome on Tuesday evening. In a social media post, he argued that his absence from the ballot was responsible for the party’s losses, declaring: “I wasn’t on the Ballot and if I was, we would have won IN A LANDSLIDE!”

The Democratic takeover of Congress is expected to have far-reaching political consequences. With control of both chambers, Democrats will be in a stronger position to scrutinize the Trump administration, launch investigations and challenge executive decisions that previously faced little resistance under a Republican-controlled Congress.

Beyond its immediate impact on Washington, the election outcome could also shape the future composition of the Supreme Court, influence the direction of the 2028 presidential contest and determine the prospects of Trump’s legislative agenda during the remaining years of his presidency.
