Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has assured the public that the government has activated measures to contain suspected and confirmed cases of yellow fever recorded in parts of the country. He said a National Rapid Response Team has been deployed to the northern part of Ghana, particularly the Upper West Region, following the confirmation of cases in the area.
Speaking at the Ministry of Health’s Health Sector Update Engagement in Accra, Mr Akandoh said designated areas at district hospitals in affected communities have been isolated to facilitate the management and treatment of suspected and confirmed cases. He added that health authorities have stepped up disease surveillance and supplied laboratories with the necessary reagents to support the timely detection and confirmation of suspected yellow fever cases.
“As of yesterday, the suspected cases were around 450 from June to September. Out of that, 74 were from the Upper West and three were confirmed from Upper West,” he said. The minister urged the public to remain calm and cooperate with health officials, stressing that the necessary response measures have been activated to prevent further transmission of the disease.
“We don’t have to press the panic buttons. So let us, the media, please, let’s handle it well. There are a lot of things that have been deployed. The National Rapid Response Team has been deployed to the northern part of the country, especially the Upper West, where we’ve detected cases and we are handling it,” he said.
