The Ghana Police Service has arrested 36 suspects in connection with the death of a police officer who was allegedly attacked and lynched by a mob at Gindabour in the Sawla District of the Savannah Region. In a press statement issued on September 17, the Police Service said preliminary investigations showed that on September 16, the deceased officer and his colleagues were conducting highway patrol duties along the Gindabour–Kenkyen community road.
According to the statement, a motorbike rider approaching the officers suddenly veered into the bush after spotting the police vehicle. The officers, who became suspicious, followed from another direction and found the rider unconscious on a bush road. The officers reportedly picked up the rider and were transporting him to a hospital when he died on the way.
Following news of his death, a mob from the community allegedly attacked the police officers, resulting in the death of General Constable Redeemer Owusu. Several other officers sustained various degrees of injury, while the police vehicle was also damaged in the attack. The bodies of both the deceased officer and the motorbike rider have since been conveyed to the Damongo Morgue for preservation and autopsy.
The Inspector-General of Police has deployed investigators and intelligence officers to support the ongoing investigation and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice. Reinforcement teams from Damongo, Bole, Sawla, Tuna, Kalba, and the Regional Intelligence Team have also been deployed to the area to strengthen security and maintain law and order.
The 36 suspects are currently in police custody and are assisting with investigations. They are expected to be put before the court. The Police Command condemned the attack on its officers and reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that those responsible face the full rigours of the law.
