The government has paid promotion salary arrears to 52,000 teachers, while payments to the remaining 28,000 are yet to be settled, Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has disclosed. According to the Minister, the 52,000 teachers completed the required validation process, out of approximately 80,000 who had been awaiting payment of their promotion arrears.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Tuesday, October 27, Mr Iddrisu appealed to the affected teachers to refrain from embarking on another strike, assuring them that efforts were underway to address their concerns. He explained that the government had settled the arrears for the 52,000 teachers who had been validated by October 16. However, he noted that the outstanding payments involved about 28,000 people, including some non-teaching staff whose validation process was yet to be completed.
The Minister said he had contacted teacher union leaders to convene an emergency meeting by the end of Tuesday to discuss the outstanding payments and determine the way forward. He further indicated that the government was working towards paying the remaining eligible teachers by the end of November.
Mr Iddrisu acknowledged that some affected teachers might not receive their arrears alongside their October salaries, adding that the government could consider a supplementary payment to facilitate the process or defer the payments to November. The announcement comes after teachers suspended their industrial action over delays in the payment of their promotion salary arrears.
