A total of 15,000 aspirants are competing for NDC executive seats across 276 constituencies

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is holding its constituency executive elections nationwide as part of efforts to reorganise and strengthen its grassroots structures ahead of the 2028 general elections. The exercise, scheduled for Saturday, October 24, and Sunday, October 25, 2026, is expected to determine the leadership of the party’s constituency structures across the country. However, the planned polls in Nkwanta North in the Oti Region face a legal hurdle following an interlocutory injunction issued by the High Court in Dambai.

The court order restrains the NDC from conducting the elections in the constituency and from using or relying on a register of branch executives compiled after elections held in June and July 2026. Despite the injunction, the party’s Acting Director of IT and Elections, Mahdi Jibrill, has maintained that the Nkwanta North elections will go ahead, insisting that the party has not been formally served with the court order.

Speaking on Eyewitness News on Thursday, October 22, Mr Jibrill said preparations were ongoing because the party’s leadership had not received official notification of the injunction. “The Nkwanta North election will come on this weekend. From what I have in the data as we speak, we have no injunction on us. Nobody has served us, and party headquarters, the general secretary, is running the election of the constituency. So for us, we know the election will go on,” he said.

The NDC’s constituency executive elections form part of a broader reorganisation programme aimed at renewing the party’s leadership and strengthening its organisational structures from the grassroots to the national level in preparation for the next general election. According to information from the party’s elections leadership, approximately 15,000 aspirants are expected to contest various executive positions across the NDC’s 276 constituencies.

The positions up for election include constituency chairman, vice-chairman, secretary, treasurer, organiser, deputy organiser, communications officer, women’s organiser, youth organiser, and several other key roles within the party’s structure. Those elected will oversee party activities in their constituencies, mobilise members, strengthen local organisational structures, and advance the NDC’s political agenda and programmes.

The elections mark a significant step in the party’s preparations for the 2028 general elections, with constituency executives expected to spearhead grassroots mobilisation and voter engagement. The process is being supervised by the Electoral Commission in partnership with constituency election committees, while the Ghana Police Service is providing security to ensure peaceful and orderly polls.
