Five Transport Unions Declare Nationwide Commercial Vehicle Strike on November 4

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) of TUC, together with four other transport unions, has announced a nationwide suspension of commercial transport services on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, in protest against the government’s alleged failure to enforce regulations banning trading at bus stops and pedestrian walkways. In a statement issued on November 1, 2026, the unions said the decision to embark on the industrial action followed what they described as the government’s persistent failure to enforce L.I. 2519, Regulation 142.

They expressed concern over the continued occupation of designated bus stops by traders, arguing that the situation has made it increasingly difficult for commercial drivers to operate from their authorised loading and unloading points.

The unions also raised concerns about what they consider unfair treatment of commercial drivers, who continue to receive traffic fines through the government’s TRAFFITECH-GH monitoring system despite being unable to access bus stops occupied by traders.

According to the unions, drivers are being penalised for traffic violations while the authorities have failed to take adequate action against traders occupying designated bus stops and pedestrian walkways. As part of the planned protest, all commercial vehicle operators have been instructed to park their vehicles on Wednesday, November 4, and remain off the roads until further notice.

The unions apologised to commuters and the general public for the inconvenience the shutdown may cause, explaining that the decision was reached after all other avenues had been exhausted. The statement was jointly endorsed by representatives of five transport organisations: the GPRTU of TUC, Commercial Transport Operators of Ghana, True Drivers Union, Ghana Committed Drivers Association and Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana.

The planned action is expected to disrupt commercial road transport services across the country, potentially affecting thousands of commuters who rely on these services for their daily movement. Commuters have therefore been advised to take note of the planned shutdown and make alternative transportation arrangements ahead of Wednesday’s action.
