Nigerian gospel singer and pastor Nathaniel Bassey has achieved a remarkable milestone by surpassing one billion views on YouTube, making him the first African gospel artist to reach this landmark. His official YouTube channel, Nathaniel Bassey Main, has accumulated over 1.014 billion views and 5.24 million subscribers since its launch in 2011, according to the platform’s current statistics.
This accomplishment coincides with the October 2026 edition of the Hallelujah Challenge, an online prayer and worship program launched by Bassey in 2017. The monthly initiative features midnight sessions of praise, worship, and prayer, attracting participants from around the world. Originally started as an online worship gathering, the Hallelujah Challenge has evolved into an international Christian movement, with thousands participating in live sessions and millions more watching recorded versions.
Bassey is well-known for his popular gospel songs, such as “Imela,” “Onise Iyanu,” “Olowogbogboro,” and “You Are God,” which have significantly contributed to his popularity among gospel music audiences in Nigeria and beyond.
The excitement generated by reaching the one-billion-view milestone has led some of his followers to suggest that he could explore opportunities for monetising his growing online worship audience. However, Bassey has emphasised that the Hallelujah Challenge is primarily focused on worship and spiritual devotion rather than generating revenue.
