ECG Maintenance-Induced Power Cuts Leave Central Region Communities Frustrated

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has announced scheduled power outages in parts of the Central Region and other areas from Wednesday, November 4, to Friday, November 6, 2026, to undertake essential maintenance and system upgrade works. The affected communities in the Central Region include Ansapatu, Abrafo, Apenkro, Hemang, Eduabeng and their surrounding areas. On Wednesday, November 4, the affected communities experienced power interruptions between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., while some areas were scheduled to remain without electricity until 5:00 p.m.

The exercise is continuing from Thursday, November 5, through Friday, November 6, with parts of Accra West, Accra East, Tema and the Central Region expected to experience interruptions. The ongoing exercise has plunged some communities in the Central Region into darkness, disrupting business activities and affecting the daily lives of residents.

According to ECG, the temporary outages are necessary to allow engineers to carry out essential network maintenance, address faults and upgrade the electricity distribution system to improve long-term power reliability. However, the interruptions have sparked frustration among residents and business owners, with many lamenting the impact on their livelihoods. Some traders, artisans and shop owners say they have been unable to operate, make sales or charge their mobile phones due to the lack of electricity.

Residents have also expressed concerns about food spoiling, water pumps becoming unusable and businesses losing income after being unable to operate for an entire day. The situation has left some communities frustrated, with residents expressing concern over the disruption under the slogan, “No light, no work.” While acknowledging the importance of maintenance works, residents have urged ECG to improve its communication with the public and ensure that power is restored within the announced timeframes.

ECG has, meanwhile, appealed to residents to remain calm and treat all electrical installations as live, cautioning that electricity could be restored at any time before the scheduled end of the outage. The Company has stressed that the interruptions are deliberate and planned maintenance interventions and should not be mistaken for a nationwide power crisis or dumsor.
