The High Court has granted the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) authority to arrest the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, as part of an ongoing investigation. The court also authorised EOCO to search for and seize documents it considers relevant to the investigation. However, it directed the Office to execute the arrest through the Speaker of Parliament.
EOCO had applied for the orders, informing the court that its attempts to secure the MP’s voluntary attendance had been unsuccessful. The Office also raised concerns that documents linked to the investigation could be concealed, altered or destroyed if the requested orders were not granted.
The development follows an incident at the Accra High Court on September 23, when EOCO officials attempted to arrest Mr Baffour Awuah. EOCO subsequently explained that the attempted arrest was connected to an investigation for which the MP had been invited on two occasions in February 2026.
Mr Baffour Awuah, however, has disputed EOCO’s account. He said the investigation concerns SIC Life Savings and Loans Company, which had previously engaged his former law firm, Sarkodie Baffour Awuah & Partners. According to the MP, after receiving EOCO’s invitation in February, he referred the matter to the Clerk to Parliament. A representative of his former law firm subsequently appeared before EOCO investigators on March 4, March 18 and April 30.
He said the representative provided the investigators with the information they requested, including a written statement. The investigation is reportedly linked to financial transactions involving SIC Life Savings and Loans and Equity Savings and Loans.
Mr Baffour Awuah explained that his former law firm had been engaged by SIC Life Savings and Loans to recover approximately GH¢3.5 million that the company had invested with Equity Savings and Loans. He said the investment, together with accrued interest, eventually amounted to about GH¢14 million before the parties reached a negotiated settlement.
EOCO has not publicly disclosed the full scope or details of the investigation. The latest court order gives EOCO legal authority to arrest the MP and conduct searches and seizures in connection with the investigation, subject to the court’s directive that the arrest be carried out through the Speaker of Parliament.
