Harry Kane has become the first English player in 25 years to win the Ballon d’Or, receiving the prestigious award at a ceremony held in London. Michael Owen was the last Englishman to claim the coveted individual honour in 2001. However, Kane’s remarkable tally of 73 goals for club and country last season earned him the recognition from French magazine France Football.
The Bayern Munich striker was widely celebrated as a deserving winner in the capital, joining an illustrious list of English Ballon d’Or recipients that includes Sir Stanley Matthews, Sir Bobby Charlton, Kevin Keegan and Owen. Kane emerged victorious ahead of Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe and Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal.
An emotional Kane struggled to contain his excitement as he addressed the audience on stage. “Wow, I’m almost speechless,” he said. “First of all, thanks again to France Football and the Ballon d’Or for this amazing event. Being in London makes it even more special; it felt like a good omen.”
