The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) is expected to invite a nurse for further questioning next week following a controversial TikTok livestream that allegedly showed a pregnant patient in visible distress. The incident has sparked concerns over patient privacy, professional ethics and the need to uphold the dignity of individuals receiving medical care.
The matter was brought to the attention of the Ministry of Health after a concerned individual raised the issue on social media. In a Facebook post on Friday, October 6, the Ministry’s Public Relations Officer, Tony Goodman, revealed that the Council was preparing to engage the nurse over the incident. According to Goodman, he had received credible information that the nurse would be invited by the NMC next week for further discussions.
“The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) is following up on the matter concerning this nurse. I am reliably informed that she is expected to be invited by the Council next week for further engagement,” he stated. I can also make it more concise and give it a stronger, professional news-reporting tone suitable for publication.
Livestream sparks outrage
A Facebook user, Dickson Assan, who reported the incident to the Ghana Health Service (GHS), said he came across the TikTok Live session in the early hours of the day and was disturbed by what he witnessed. The host, who appeared to be a nurse, was broadcasting a visibly distressed pregnant patient, he posted.
He recounted that during the livestream, the host was seen rubbing the patient’s back, apparently in an attempt to comfort her. However, the gesture reportedly drew inappropriate remarks and ridicule from some viewers. According to the Facebook user, the situation took a more disturbing turn when one viewer questioned the appropriateness of broadcasting the incident, only to be insulted by other participants.
The user further alleged that the host displayed a Mobile Money (MoMo) number during the livestream and appealed to viewers for financial contributions while the patient was visibly distressed. He expressed concern over the healthcare worker’s conduct, questioning why someone entrusted with caring for patients would seemingly compromise the privacy and dignity of a vulnerable individual by turning her ordeal into social media content and an opportunity to solicit money.
