The government has announced a number of measures to address concerns raised by striking teacher unions following a meeting with the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu. As part of the measures, the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission is expected to meet the unions on Tuesday, October 6, to engage them on their collective agreement and conditions of service.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Education, a committee chaired by the Minister of Labour and Employment has also been established to validate data relating to the government’s commitment to introduce a 20% deprived-area allowance effective January 2027.
Additionally, the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service has been directed to submit data on promoted teachers to the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department by the end of the week. The move is expected to facilitate the payment of salaries and arrears owed to teachers who were promoted by October.
Despite the measures announced by the government, the striking teacher unions have maintained that they will not suspend their industrial action following their meeting with the Education Minister.
