Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has called for greater consistency in player selection, arguing that Ghana cannot build a successful team if the squad is constantly reshuffled from one match to another. Speaking ahead of the Black Stars’ AFCON qualifier against The Gambia, Queiroz said building a team capable of achieving sustained success requires a stable core of players and a systematic approach to team development.
“You cannot build a winning team if you change every camp; you change seven, eight, nine players,” Queiroz said. He stressed that occasional victories or qualification campaigns should not be mistaken for the development of a winning culture, saying a championship team must consistently compete for major honours.
“To win or qualify one team once in a while is not about having a winning team, a culture team, a champions team,” he said. According to Queiroz, Ghana must build a team capable of regularly challenging for the Africa Cup of Nations and performing strongly at the World Cup, rather than relying on isolated successes.
“We need more heroes,” he said, pointing to Ghana’s past achievements, including the 1982 Africa Cup of Nations triumph and the Black Stars’ historic run to the quarter-finals of the 2010 World Cup. The coach said his immediate focus was on securing victory in the next match, but noted that preparations must also help lay the groundwork for the team’s long-term development.
“We have to win the game tomorrow,” he said. “But at the same time, we have to put the seeds of the future,” Queiroz called for the establishment of a strong core of players, supported by clear communication and mutual trust among the Ghana Football Association, the technical team and the players.
“We need to have the core of the team prepared and ready to come,” he said. He added that creating a stable team environment would help Ghana develop the consistency needed to compete at the highest level. The comments come as Queiroz prepares the Black Stars for Tuesday’s AFCON qualifier against The Gambia, following Ghana’s defeat to Côte d’Ivoire in their opening match of the qualifiers.
